Our history books don’t speak much of ecology, and certainly not of lowly insects and viruses. However, for 300 years world history cannot be understood without the mosquitoes of the Caribbean: Not the independence of the United States, nor how Haiti’s enslaved Africans could win over 65,000 French troops Napoleon sent to reconquer the island, nor why colonial South America did not become British, nor Cuba’s independence, nor the Panama Canal. So why is this so? And why don’t we learn (or teach) it?

Das Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) ist eine zentrale wissenschaftliche Einrichtung der Universität Heidelberg für interdisziplinäre Forschung, Lehre und Wissenstransfer zu, mit und in der Makroregion Ibero-Amerika. Das HCIAS Wednesday Colloquium findet jedes Semester statt und bietet ein Forum für den Austausch zu aktuellen Themen mit regionalem Bezug. Sowohl internationale Referent:innen als auch Forscher:innen des HCIAS und der Universität Heidelberg stellen ihre Arbeiten aus den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften vor.
