Funding for students Amirana Scholarships 2025 for six medical students from five countries

In 2025, the Amirana Scholarship will once again provide financial support for medical students at Heidelberg University. This year, six students from Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Cameroon will benefit from a total funding amount of 23,000 euros. The scholarship is aimed at Heidelberg medical and dental students from countries in the Global South who are in financial need or require special support during their final degree phase.

The scholarship holders receive a monthly grant towards their living expenses or tuition fees. The scholarship fund was established in 2016 with a generous donation from Dr Mahomed T. Amirana and Dr Annelene J. Amirana, a married couple living in the USA who met while studying medicine in Heidelberg in the 1950s. In recent years, further donations have been received for the scholarship – not only has the Amirana couple made several donations, but US alumnus Richard Anderson is also a very generous regular donor. In addition, the scholarship is funded by donations from some alumnae and alumni from Europe. We continue to ask for donations for the Amirana Scholarship in order to be able to support students in need in the future.

Kay Nangah

“The funding enables me to concentrate fully on my exams and practical experience,” reports Kay Nangah from Cameroon, one of this year's scholarship holders. She is preparing for her third state examination and is working on her doctoral thesis at the same time. “Without the Amirana scholarship, I would not be able to deepen my clinical training and pursue my scientific goals at the same time.”

Five of the six sponsored students are enrolled at the Heidelberg Medical Faculty and one student at the Mannheim Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University. All of the scholarship holders are performing well to very well and are at an advanced stage of their studies – be it in preparation for the state examination or their doctoral thesis.
