Event Heidelberger Brücke: Climate Action in Times of Global Crises and Social Upheavals
Press Release No. 31/2025
10 April 2025
Environmental science colloquium features online and in-person events
Action to mitigate climate change in times of global crises and upheavals in society will be addressed at the colloquium “Heidelberger Brücke” taking place in the 2025 summer semester. The Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE), the environmental research center of Heidelberg University, is hosting the events under the general heading “Pushed to the Sidelines? Climate Action in Contested Times”. The series, to be held in English, will start on 17 April 2025, when Dr Marina Treskova addresses the question of how nature-based solutions can counteract negative climate-related consequences for health. The total of four events – including a panel discussion – will take place online and in person.
The speaker for the opening lecture leads a junior research group for eco-epidemiology at Heidelberg University. Her contribution is entitled “Nature-Based Solutions and Health in the Context of Climate Change”. The following two lectures on 5 June and 8 July take up different aspects of climate action in view of political, social and economic tensions. The venue for the in-person events is the lecture hall of the Marsilius-Kolleg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 130.1, starting at 12.30pm.

The panel discussion on the topic of how universities and cities can cooperate to implement the United Nations’ sustainable development goals will take place on 15 May with, as panelists, researchers from the universities of Heidelberg, Copenhagen (Denmark) and Geneva (Switzerland), as well as the mayor responsible for Climate Protection, Environment and Mobility of the City of Heidelberg. The event “From Advocacy to Action: How can Universities and Cities Work Together to Achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals?” is being jointly conducted with the 4EU+ European University Alliance. It will take place in the Great Hall of the Old University and will also be livestreamed. It starts at 5.30pm. Registration is required in both cases.
The Heidelberg Center for the Environment links up existing competences in the environmental sciences at Heidelberg University and initiates new research projects. Transcending the boundaries of subjects and disciplines, the members of the HCE engage with the challenges to livelihoods arising from the transformation underway in nature, technology and society. Their goal is to counteract ecological impacts through research. The colloquium “Heidelberger Brücke” provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and communication with the public.

Online participation in the events of the colloquium “Heidelberger Brücke” as well as participation in the panel discussion – whether online or in person – requires registration on the colloquium website:
